Posted - 07/09/2019 : 10:35:06 PM I am building a layout here, I might seem that all I do is build Steam Engines but, their is a modest model railroad being built too. Here is part one; http://www.railroad-line.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=37052
This is the current track plan;

For the last two years I have been focused on build two detailed models of 1870's Moguls that are currently hard at work in 1886. The Girls works hard but are well maintained. I am using the wagon top Moguls of the Virginia and Truckee RR as my prototype drawing heavily from Engine number 4 and 13. In build these two engines I have been relying on 3D drawing and printing on a backbone of conventional model making techniques.
Let the fun continue... |

Posted - 04/19/2021 : 12:56:15 PM Bob, Mogul is coming along beautifully! Nice in action video. I came across this image from the John H. White Jr. collection in the Smithsonian, and it reminded me of some of your buildings you recently assembled. Scott

Posted - 04/18/2021 : 4:45:20 PM Work on the Mogul 5 continues. Lots of testing up and down the grades and through the #4 Peco Insta-frog turnouts. The engine continues to run very well. I had an issue with the front tender truck being lifted which caused derailment at frogs and one grade change. I found that the drawbar was lifting the tender (hence the truck)up. I used a longer screw on the engine end of the drawbar to lower the draw bar and solved the problem. I'm getting a little gear grinding noise when the engine is under stress. I don't know if I should be concerned about it. Just a note; I find it useful to mute all those Beautiful engine sounds when doing some of the testing so I can better hear the actual engine sounds. So far the engine has about 5 hours on it's clock. I've also continued to work on cosmetic repairs and improvements. Little things. Like I redid the nose number plate adding a backing and a brass rim around the plate to give it a meatier appearance. I also touched up the paint some. I still haven't added the cab as it is so much easier to wire up and install the driveline without it.

Thank you Bernd, I appreciate your comments. On the Sync of the drivers. The truth is; I got them as close as I could. The sync precision varies as it goes through its speed range so I set at the speed I will usually run the engine at. I wish could use the "PFM method".

7 cars up a 5% is very good for such a small engine with no traction tires!

Andre, Part of the credit for the engine's performance goes to the cars. All my car are very light. Sheldon over an ounce. I've long known how poor these little engines perform and have planned accordingly. My ruling main line grade is 3.5% and it's in hidden track. In the plan on page one of this thread it runs from the underpass up to Beaver Jct.. All visible trackage (from the operator's pit) is about 2%. I should measure it now that I have the fancy level. Anyway, to compensate for the whippy engines I have all sorts of contingency plans. Like double heading with brass engines or having a power car. But now, honestly a seven car train is a long train on my little layout so I won't need those plans. Though I will double head just for the drama of it. My Americans will mostly be in passenger service were four cars is hoped for. Until recently I feared I would have to employ contingency plans there too but with more and more resin kits being printed I shouldn't have too use them here ether. Yes, it's a good time to in early rail.

From what I see, I think I could dial that in (set some CV's) so you'd be quite pleased with its performance.

And she pulls seven flatcars out of the staging track hole (5%). That's the same pulling power as my Bachmann NT Americans. I'm very happy with this.
Enjoy

Posted - 04/10/2021 : 12:40:17 AM Thank You Andre, The Wine is authentic too. It looks red in the sunlight and UPS brown indoors. Drives you up the wall.
Thank you Mike, It will look better when everything is back together and the paint repaired.
