This drawing showed up on the EarlyRail groups.io list:

Craig Bisgeier drew up the basic parts and 3D printed them. I primed with "Mr Surfacer 500", sanded a bit, then added the rivet strips (styrene) and rivets (Archer decals). I also filled in the center box with some lead shot to add some weight.

Then I painted with Model Air Panzer Grey.

I should have put another coat of Mr Surfacer and sanded again to get rid of the print lines. But the rivets look good.

Tonight I'll finish assembly and start weathering.

FWIW:

Scale test cars...

That is now done by a truck w/powered boom, typically a contractor operation. The operator uses the power boom to set a lightweight self-powered (as I recall) car on rails, then booms weights onto it. When finished testing/calibrating the scales, they reverse the procedure and head for their next location.

xomeone commented to me about the location of that car. It's a posed shot :-) Normally, these were located at the end of the train just in front of the caboose.

By the way, the flat card load is the styrene Oak Mtn (narrow) lumber car load. I added wood grain with coarse sandpaper, sprayed a flat finish, then applied HunterLine Driftwood stain. I think it came out pretty good.

Agree with George: An interesting model that you don't see too often. Looking good.

Interesting model, Dave. It looks good. I had to do a Google search for "Mr Surfacer 500". I had never heard of it before.

Sorry, I forgot to post the almost-done photo:

I had some problems with the decal strips coming off. In most cases I was able to carefully glue them back down, but I'll have to replace the one where you see that little white patch. Then repaint.

I don't know if Craig wants to sell these.

update: Talked to Craig about this. He'll work up a price and I'll do the kit instructions. It'll probably show up on his Amesvilleshops.com website. It'll be just the 3D parts, you'll have to add styrene strip, rivets. brake staff, handrail wire, weight and wheel sets.

Looks interesting. Will this car be available for purchase?

Dave,

Thatís a car few modelers have on their layout. It will be a nice detail on yours.

Looks like Craig is having fun.

I saw it on facebook. It looks better here. With you using decal rivets I would of been tempted to just print with Shapeways in Brass.
But you saved about $75.00 too.

Nothing like having a 3D print machine on hand. Nice looking scale test car.
