Well thanks Dave.I had a older brother who went by stumps. He was big into C&S mainly in Sn3. He passrd a few years back so I guess its sentimental.

Stumps (you have a real name?),
Welcome to the best source for information and assistance anywhere. The members here are avid and knowledgeable. Check out Rob Chant's thread on designing layouts. He loves to doodle and has great ideas. It is sometimes hard to find info on the site but if you use Advanced Google Search and restrict your search to the "railroad-line.com" it will search this site better than the internal search engine. Louis had more schematics and data than the library of Congress.
I look forward to watching your build.
Cheers,
Dave

Biggest difference as far as I'm concerned comparing HO to ON30 is the structures. What looks good in HO takes lots of structures, that same scene looks good in O scale with a few detailed structures. IE running steamers in HO and making even a small engine terminal takes many buildings while a small engine terminal in O scale can be very effective with just a few structures. That's my 2 cents worth, spend wisely! Welcome to the dark side, you'll love it! Russ

Try to go no less than a 22" for best performance. See here for some good informational help; On30 Commercial Loco and Car Minimum Radius Guide - http://www.npcrr.net/On30/On30Loco_n_Car_Radius_pics.pdf

I have a 2' x 20' layout with a loop at one end. My biggest suggestion is to look very very hard at your minimum radius. That radius will determine a lot of what you can do. I have one curve that drops down to 18 inches. That short 18 inch section gives me most of my headaches. Think very carefully about what you want to run and test test test and test again to see if your preferred locos will run on your minimum radius.

And have fun. Fun is the key.

12x16 is a larger space than most ON30 layouts live in. I hope we are all following your build soon.

Thanks that really helps.

You can do a lot within that size of an On30 layout. Here is just one example of an outstanding layout, the Thunder Mesa Mining Co. On30 Overall size: 15.5'x 8.5' http://thundermesa.studio/model-railroads/track-plans/
There are many plans within your measurements for great looking On30.
