Great work and awesome idea about the leaf punch!

And... you must have the patience of a saint to model this tree.

Wonderful tree with all the intricate branches. The leaf punch is a great idea!
Pennman Posted - 02/28/2020 : 08:54:25 AM

I don't know about the wrong paint, but that tree isn't wrong !! Exceptional work.
On a side note, my wife has all of those leaf punches and the other one is poplar. She uses them for card making. I would use them if small enough for HO, but Carl stands correct, too big.

Carl B Posted - 02/28/2020 : 08:34:44 AM
Looks great..

it punches out four different sized leaves

This is most certainly one of the joys of large scale modeling eh, Bob?

No such luck in HO scale.

Greg and Jim, thanks for your comments.

Since the whole idea of this tree involves leaves that did not fall from the tree, I had
to have some leaves. I see that some laser cut leaves are available and they are very
nice but also very expensive. I searched the web and found this little punch. On each
stroke it punches out four different sized leaves, in this case, maple leaves. They also
have ones that punch out oak leaves, birch leaves, and I forget the fourth one.

I Found some colored paper from Boise Fireworks that is very thin, I think it was
20 lb, much thinner then regular construction paper. This not only looked better it was easier on punching.

After I had punched a bunch of leaves I found that pressing on then to curl them a bit
looked much better than leaving them flat, at least most of them.

More when I have more leaves punched........

That sir, is very slick!

Bob, looks like you've been really branching out there, with excellent results
I love the look of the single small branches.

Mike, Bruce, Jerry, and Philip, thanks for your comments.

Here's the first coat of brown. I see that I made a mistake and picked up the rattle can
of brown GLOSS!! No matter, I wanted two heavy coats anyway

Here it is painted with RUST-OLEUM CAMOUFLAGE dark brown. I can see a similar Maple tree
right outside my window sitting here at the computer and that paint looks right on.

BTW the tree can still be reshaped and trimmed all you want.

Sure is! Thanks for sharing!

That is really cool. Nice looking tree.

Wow, Bob. You can really see the tree arising from that mass of wire.

Michael Hohn Posted - 02/27/2020 : 07:55:47 AM
Your tree is taking shape quite nicely, Bob. Very realistic.

sgtbob Posted - 02/27/2020 : 05:56:18 AM
Greg, Bill, and Frank, thanks for your comments.

I finally got all branches down to one wire. It is still easy to trim and shape the tree
and Bill, it is a maple like one I can see from this window.

I want to get a couple of heavy coats of paint on it and then start the detailing. If
you remember back when I started this I want to portray a tree that did not shed all it's
leaves before the snow and the weight of snow will be pulling one branch down.

I remember a few years ago when we had a wet snow when most of the trees had most of their
leaves still attached. The weight of the snow caught by the leaves broke many branches
loose from the trees and it also brought down many whole trees and power lines.

Now to the paint shop.

Cool project.
