This will be my first attempt at uploading a resized photo to the forum.

I've been inactive in the hobby for over thirty years. Now as I near retirement, the bug has bit again. I'm actually starting to build some of those kits on the shelves.

While in the USAF in the erly 1970's I was stationed in San Antonio. There was a layout at Lackland AFB above the bowling alley. I met several modelers who would become inspirations to me. I hung around with Miles Hale, Dick Schaeffer, Bob Clark and John Lawrence. They got me hooked on Shays and HOn3.

So without further adoo, here's my trackplan for the North Coast Railroad, Great Lakes based shortline. I was influenced by the real Buffalo harbor. The Bar Mills "Wharf Street" The C&D Railroad (featured on this forum) and Troells Kirk

Dave,
Nice job on the turntable. A unique setting for sure.

Thanks to all who have been following this topic, and My posts in general. I do appreciate both your interest and feedback.

I do tend to jump around from one thing to another, including a section I had interest in about 18 months ago, using Infrared Sensors as either fouling point or occupancy detectors.

I'm to that point of construction where it is now or never. For the most part I will make entries in that topic thread found at:

http://www.railroad-line.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=51192

Here, I will simply say I have come with a way to use either a single unit for occupancy on a single track, or a matched pair for fine tuning of fouling points across two tracks.

Getting closer to being done with what started as a simple atlas surface mount turntable. Safe to say, not so simple any more.

The super structure is now assembled including the truss rods (.020 music wire) One change I decided upon was using a rock crib base instead of the original round cylinder for a base. It just didn't seem to match with every else that was being done.

The building in the back ground is only there to make the scene a little nicer. The hand painted background mural helps set the illusion. The second photo is a bit more close range, and cropped.

178! That's a lot!

The NBW castings came in the mail today about 4:30 pm. 178 pieces later, the gallows superstructure of the turntable got a full dose of them. Tomorrow should be the addition of the guy wires and final superstructure assembly.

Hopefully pics will follow after that point.

Thanks to all for your continued interest. Comments and constructive ideas are always welcome.

I was thinking of a retired one armed alligator wrestler, named "Stumpy", and his grandson, "Seven Finger Sven, (who no longer is allowed to play with fireworks) fishing for trout in the pond.

Thought I'd add a quick pic of progress on the Turntable pit. This should give you an idea of where I'm headed with the process while I'm waiting for the NBW casting and wire.

I lowered the unit via the mounting screws, then circled the unit with wax paper, to keep the glued rock castings from sticking to the pit unit. The lower wall was built up stone by stone.

No pictures at this point to update progress, although I has gotten quite a bit done over the last few days.

The main line incline under the steps is progressing. I had some issues with trying configure where to locate a "Tortoise" on the upper level just to the right of the Rubbles Station. The hidden reverse loop trackage is directly underneath, so there was no room for a switch motor . Finally concluded to double track the mainline until it reaches under the steps where I can separate top from bottom, where there is room to add the tortoise.

One advantage is being able to run longer trains, as there is now longer passing sidings as a result of moving the turnout several feet further to the to the right than originally planned.

Additional work has been done in the turntable pit. I've added cut stone blocks to the edges on the lowest level. The upper ring is much more rough, more of a blasted stone look to it.

That's about all for now.

Ok, just this sentence by itself could send the mind into the gutter.

Just ordered 1200 nut/bolt/washer casting from Tichy.

Hopefully that will last me a couple of days. (Depends upon having decaf or regular I guess)

Also got several sizes of music wire being sent. Looks the same size as a G string to me.
