For my next Railroad I want to replicate some of the activities of the Corps of Canadian Railway Troops in Europe 1918.

At the height of World War 1 the Corps of Canadian Railway Troops contained 19,000 personnel - 16,000 working in France and Belgium, with the remainder in England.

Canadian railway soldiers constructed all light railways in areas occupied by the five British Armies, and 60 % of the standard gauge lines connecting the channel ports to the front lines. In total, Canadians built 1169 miles of broad gauge railway line and miles of narrow gauge line during their wartime service. That is some serious Narrow Gauge railroad to model.

For some partial information you can go to this link:

I will be modeling using 1/43 and 1/48 in forced perspective. Track will be Code 70 set at 16.5 mm. It should be 14mm but I need to use available drive units from HO models. Therefore the closest fit is ON30.

I have been building a few models for the past 6 months. Now it is time to get serious.

Let the games begin.

Thanks all.

Thanks for the story. I am posting a picture for you. If you have a picture of your Grandfather and his brother I can try to get figures that look similar. Please share any other information you might have.

My grandfather and his brother were both in the Canadian Railway cop. My grandfather was wounded in the lower abdomen by a shell splinter...his brother carried him back to an aid station were he was pronounced dead. His brother insisted they keep working on him, he was revived and patched-up enough to be sent back to a real hospital. He ended up with intestinal gangrene but somehow managed to survive( no antibiotics in those days) and was invalidated out and sent back to Canada. I still remember the time I first saw the golf-ball sized divot in his abdomen and he told me just that he had been wounded. A few years later he gave me the piece of shrapnel( or so he claimed it to be)....but he never went into details about his wounding. A second cousin researched it about ten years ago and told me then.

A great way to spend your time on the road, Larry. Those soldiers look great.

Impressive to say the least!

I submitted a request to include my layout in the 2021 Hickory NNGC last week.

Two years to finish, the clock is ticking now.

I took more figures on the road with me this last week and was able to finish 31. I know it is getting boring seeing all these figures but I need to make sure I do something as I travel. I need to finish something every two weeks now.

Thanks to all who stopped in for a look and for the kind words.
I am traveling on business but did bring 120 detail parts to paint.
Dave - I placed an order for the shading paint you suggested. I will give it a try soon.
Still lots to do in this project. I plan on a first showing of part of the layout this fall. A larger section next July.
Deadlines are good for me. Keeps me honest.

Larry, great work on the figs. If I could offer a suggestion, Games Workshop has a product for shading acrylics called Agrqax Earthshade - it's in their "Shade" range (oddly enough). They have a number of colours but this one is a brown and would fill the recesses, leaving raised portions as highlights - all in one fell swoop. MIG probably also has a similar one, Vallejo, may but I don't think so. It would add a level of realism with minimal effort.
Keep up the fantastic work! Cheers,

Amazing work. What patience to detail so many figures at that level.

Larry you are the man, the man, the man, the woman, the man . . . .

Several searches didn't turn up a date for NNGC 2021 in Hickory, NC (some relatives live nearby, which would make it easy to turn into a family vacation). If nobody here knows, I'll ask a larger audience.
