For my next Railroad I want to replicate some of the activities of the Corps of Canadian Railway Troops in Europe 1918.

At the height of World War 1 the Corps of Canadian Railway Troops contained 19,000 personnel - 16,000 working in France and Belgium, with the remainder in England.

Canadian railway soldiers constructed all light railways in areas occupied by the five British Armies, and 60 % of the standard gauge lines connecting the channel ports to the front lines. In total, Canadians built 1169 miles of broad gauge railway line and miles of narrow gauge line during their wartime service. That is some serious Narrow Gauge railroad to model.

For some partial information you can go to this link:

I will be modeling using 1/43 and 1/48 in forced perspective. Track will be Code 70 set at 16.5 mm. It should be 14mm but I need to use available drive units from HO models. Therefore the closest fit is ON30.

I have been building a few models for the past 6 months. Now it is time to get serious.

Let the games begin.

Thanks Paul and Ted.
Tomorrow is the 101 Anniversary to the end of the Great war.
Lest we forget any veterans, thank you for your service.

Just went through all 30 pages again. You sure have performed an enormous amount of tedious and highly detailed work into this huge project. And it is very entertaining and interesting to view. Nice job Larry!!!

The modeling is outstanding Larry,
If you find you need these Gilpins’ just yell bud,
BigLars Posted - 11/05/2019 : 5:46:40 PM
Thanks Guys. Paul,
I have a bunch of the Gilpin ones that I might be trying for a different technic.

While I don't have any of the Grandt Line link & pin couplers, check with San Juan Models as they have taken over the Grandt line product line and a back producing parts.

The cars look good by the way.

Sorry I missed this Hudson,

Larry, but, close, about six pair of the Gilpin car ones...different shank...
BigLars Posted - 11/03/2019 : 5:30:04 PM
I have been using modified Grandt Line Link and Pin couplers for some of my builds but have almost run out. These were supplied with the Kopple side dump ore cars. Does anyone happen to have any of these they do not need?

Thanks Jerry,

At the ON30 Mid Hudson meet, my old friend Less Davis gave me some bits to get going on some US WW1 wagons to go with the soon to be delivered WW1 Baldwin.

Here are some WIP pictures and a sample of what the wagons look like in 1:1.

I am also working on some Brass Captured German equipment. That progress will be slower as I need to learn how to use the new resistance Soldering station I purchased.

Here is the start of the Deutz.
It is a 3d printed shell from shapeways https://www.shapeways.com/product/KUKMLSYGV/b-1-43-deutz-loco-2a?li=shop-results&optionId=17016791 and a custom drive combining 3d printing and operating motor, gears and wheels. The drive is from Mark Clark in the UK https://www.locosnstuff.com/.

The 3d print is not as fine as it could be but I can live with it using the 3 foot rule.

Looks like the Canadian one has a flat tire.
BigLars Posted - 10/27/2019 : 7:32:14 PM
Thanks Philip, I was happy with the fact that the cannon transporter and simplex worked so well. It ran flawlessly for 40 minutes over 9 dead frogs and no stalls. The test track was cheap Bachmann HO stuff.

The Next engine to work on is a captured German Deutz Gas Mechanical. These came in several flavors.

Here is one type captured by the Canadians.

One captured by the Americans.

Videos showing other versions.

Look for a post next week of a running model (no pressure).
