Hi all,

If you're interested here another brass build Pictorial.

At first look it seems like half of this engine tender combo is done. Not... First the decaling is the wrong color and I notice why I'm getting a short from the engine.

The pilot wheels are touching the front driver.

Here is a closer look at what I mean.

Next I also noticed the trailing truck wasn't flexing like it should.

Hi all,

Below are the pics of the completed model. Sorry for the delay in completion of this DC/lighted model.

Hope this helps and gives some ideas on your next brass project. Thanx Thom...

Thom, check your PM Inbox once a month.

thanks for that explanation. It makes sense to me now. The different sheens will definitely break up the monochrome scheme.

Thanks for your question. This build thread is in sections.

Below is a photo copy my customer sent me as a guide. He doesn't want a shiny new engine, but no weathering.

This build is to capture the flavor of a NYC & HR Atlantic. He wants a all flat black n white scheme.

I mixed a custom satin flat black with custom white decals. I've since have painted the wheels with white rims.

I will finish off the smokebox area with a solid flat clear coat which will give the front of the loco a darker sheen which will give a second tone to the engine.

I also have to remember to keep a good enough effect without bankrupting the customer (so selective modeling license).

When completed, this model should have plenty of variation details to peruse through. I will have updated pics in a day or two. Hope this helps. Thanx Thom...

Just saw this and I was marveling at your "engineering". You seem to have painted everything the same colour, may I ask why you wouldn't have some variation in the different parts? I want to paint my Bachmann locos and am having a tough time trying to figure out what colours to use for boiler, drive rods, smoke box, etc.

Hi Brass Lurkers,

So after cleaning up and painting/lettering tender. I notice the tender had a serious lean to one side.

At first I thought perhaps I off balanced weighted the model, but I hadn't weighted model yet or even added any electronics.

After some Clouseauing, I found that I missed that both truck bolsters were soldered un-even to the side frames (from the factory). So someone cheated by spinning one truck around opposite.

So I bit the bullet and stripped and properly re-soldered both even and repainted. (one should not get in habit of cheating over properly solving the problem). Just sayin'...

Now the tender sits level and after cutting down the truck springs to allow proper uneven track tracking. I also added washers to center the coupler shaft and drawbar pin.

I think one should agree, that taking the time to do a full proper pre-inspection will pay off over simply trusting that what you have is correct at first sight. (lesson learned)!

While also re-soldering the side frames I noticed one side frame axle holes were drilled slightly off center on the rear truck. (I've seen this before many times and one normally doesn't notice this from a side view, so I won't split hairs here).

Hope this helps. Thanx Thom...

Hi all still lurking about,
Below are a couple test pics to check the overall final matt finish and basic main white decal lettering added so far. Thanx Thom...

Below one more different angle pic. One might notice I removed some parts not needed on this model to better (but not completely) capture a flavor of the NYC&HR engine without bankrupting the owner. Thanx Thom...

Thanks, yes, that does help.

Thom, Ok, I just tried sending you a private message instead of another email.
