For my next Railroad I want to replicate some of the activities of the Corps of Canadian Railway Troops in Europe 1918.

At the height of World War 1 the Corps of Canadian Railway Troops contained 19,000 personnel - 16,000 working in France and Belgium, with the remainder in England.

Canadian railway soldiers constructed all light railways in areas occupied by the five British Armies, and 60 % of the standard gauge lines connecting the channel ports to the front lines. In total, Canadians built 1169 miles of broad gauge railway line and miles of narrow gauge line during their wartime service. That is some serious Narrow Gauge railroad to model.

For some partial information you can go to this link:
http://guysboroughgreatwarveterans.blogspot.com/2013/02/canadian-railway-troops.html

I will be modeling using 1/43 and 1/48 in forced perspective. Track will be Code 70 set at 16.5 mm. It should be 14mm but I need to use available drive units from HO models. Therefore the closest fit is ON30.

I have been building a few models for the past 6 months. Now it is time to get serious.

Let the games begin.

Thanks Tyson, Jerry, Dave and George.
Two hours work on this project today. I am at a fully operational (on clean rack) DC version of a 20 HP Simplex Petrol engine. I have ordered new gears, DCC decoder and Keep alive to try to make it flawless. I am also ordering a few more of these 3D printed units to play with.

Excellent modeling! Sorry to hear about Adrian.

I learned today that Adrian Swain from Wrightlines passed away last Friday. Many of the Locomotives and Wagons you see in this thread are white metal kits produced by Adrian. Arian was one of the main reasons I could get this project off the ground. rest in piece Adrian - rest assured I will finish all the kits you sold me.

Always so enjoyable to see your incredible modeling and creativity. Thanks for sharing.

Good looking artillery pieces, Larry. As you said, they do need mud.

Unbelievable beautiful!!

Worked with the 3d designer this morning and these are going off to be printed.

BigLars Posted - 05/30/2020 : 7:36:31 PM
Today’s progress. I will add mud when they hit the layout.
So far I have built 6 x 6” howitzers 3 x 8” howitzers, 3 x 18lb field guns for the layout. I have one 6” gun and 3 18lb guns left to build. All are heavy white metal kits.
The 3 - 8” guns will be on a module pulled by Holt tractors which I have finished.

I have a large shipment of Bogies on the way from Australia and a bunch of Styrene which will help me scratch build a number of wagons that were never produced as kits.

Arthur,
I am sure they are the same thing. I paid 4.95 per 100.

Very strong mini magnets. A nifty idea. Doc Tom

That'll improve operations a lot; definitely worth a few experiments

Looks like a good solution.

Thanks all.

I have been doing a lot more work than I am posting. I am adding DCC keepalives to all my WW1 engines. Have built three more howitzers and might have finally solved the chopper coupler challenges.

I am experimenting with small magnets and have a 3d designer working on creating a coupler that hides the magnets in the face plates.

Here are proof of concept pictures and videos.

Wish me luck.
