Hi all. I'm currently renovating a room for my layout.
It's 22' x 16' and will have coved corners.
My layout will be a freelancer Colorado narrow gauge in HOn3.
I've drawn the track plans for it, and I can't wait to start building it.
To prepare, I've been doing some city planning for one of the towns, called Twin Peaks (work name, yet to be decided)

Main Street, the town will be 8' long.
The station will be regauged to HOn3.

The street will go upwards in the back and turn into suburbs.

Good idea on the power pickups, Michael. I need to do that on a couple of my locos.

My solution of current pickup on brass locomotives.

They pick up one pole on one side of the locomotive and the other in the tender.
And it's via spring blocks .... It doesn't work well on digital.
I replaced the gearbox cover with a piece of circuit board laminate.
There is not enough space on the underside, so I had to sand the laminate 1 mm.
The holes next to the gear are filled with epoxy for strength.
The pickups are phosphor bronze which has a small spring coil made by wrapping the wire around a 0.7 mm drill bit.
The power cables are soldered to the old pickup points.
Now you have full power pickup on the locomotive, now the tender trucks will receive the same treatment.

Thanks!

The portal is installed and the tunnel tracks got cinders.

The hidden staging tracks are finished as well. Only the servos left to install.

Michael,

Thank you for the information on static grass you provided several weeks ago.

Your latest work looks wonderful. Your patience in painting the tunnel portal has paid off.

Thanks.

The tunnel is on the lower right, but the track plan has changed...

Painting of my tunnel portal. I used Vallejo's "Old & new wood effects" color kit.

IDF gray.

Painted concrete lightly and then random boards in IDF sand gray.

Some boards painted light brown.

Dry brushed with ivory sand.

More dry brush with IDF sand gray.

Dark gray wash all over.

Airbrushed soot with weathered black.

Heh. I was going to reply the other day to ask whether you were planning to add a tunnel liner, but then I thought "nah, that would just be obnoxious." Great work! All of the rock work looks terrific in fact, and the ballast/grass effect and the backdrop also look great.

Tunnel liner made of Shaper sheet.

Tunnel portal in wood.

Instead of staining the wood, I'll paint it to look like wood. This was due to the strange veins in the wood which did not look good with stains.

I use Vallejo's wood weathering kit. In the pictures I only just primed it with IDF-grey primer.

Yes, I'm trying to match some photos I have of the Colorado mountains.
The color lightened a bit when it dried.
jbvb Posted - 10/03/2019 : 2:03:11 PM
The texture looks like granite to me, though the base color of the granite is lighter than is common in New England.

I test painted a mountain...

I use regular acrylics and WS earth pigments.

First ochre.

Then burnt sienna.

And finally (?) gray stone pigment.
As it is supposed to look Colorado-ish, I hope this is the way to go.
It will lighten when dry.
Then some dry brushing.

I've started painting the backdrop.

Just regular artist acrylics.

It's important to have a good original photo to paint from.
The colors are mostly midtones at this point.

The details are being added.
A lot of work left to do.
Graffen Posted - 10/02/2019 : 06:56:35 AM
I removed a part of the foam mountain backdrop and replaced it with a piece of hardboard cut like mountains.

It will be painted to give a nice 3D effect.

Some excellent modeling of very high quality work being displayed. Please keep it coming.
Graffen Posted - 09/30/2019 : 2:11:45 PM
I've started with the plaster work on the mountains.
I use a mix of WS moulds, home made latex moulds and alu foil.

The plaster is regular plaster of Paris.

I prefer to cast in situ. I wait until the plaster shows small wrinkles in the mould before placing it on the mountain.

I carve the surface with WS rock carving tools.
May need some more plaster in places.
