My plan is to build a layout based on a Maine branch / short line in the mid-Thirties. Can anyone recommend any suitable figure makers other than the usual suspects (Noch, Preiser and so on)?

I found a British maker AC Stadden (son of Charles C Stadden) who produces some rather tasty HO figures https://www.acstadden.co.uk/

Unfortunately in HO he only does Edwardian figures (ie 1890 to 1918ish). I ordered a few packs and they are very nice sculpts indeed and I'm looking forward to painting them.

I bought the station staff, engineers and workmen sets on the basis they wouldn't look too out of place in the 1930's. However I also bought pack HO2 Edwardian People and HO8 Edwardian Children which include female figures. I don't think these will fit (well possibly the little girls might) the 30's.

Can anyone recommend 1930's suitable figures? And do you guys swap figures that don't fit your period with one another?

Hi Lynn,
Thanks for the link but three and a half bucks a figure seems fairly absurd to me. I'll work though what looks okay from the sets I have and then see if I can swap / sell the remainder - I'm not too much for using greenstuff on these small figures.

I received a reply from Andrew Stadden:

Hi Malcolm,
Thank you for your email.
I plan to provide figures from the 1930s at some point, as soon as I get the time to do it.
They will follow the present plan of similar OO and HO sets, so next to appear will be HO9 and HO10, which will match my existing OO9 and OO10 Victorians.
Best regards,
Andy Stadden

Agreed. The guys I know that do this thing for a living use something like Miliput for the sculpting process. Unfortunately their 'thing' is 1/56 (28mm) wargames figures and they won't countenance going smaller (not even to 1/100 (15mm) Napoleonics where I have some gaping holes in my collection). Andrew's dad Charles Stadden is one of the big names in model soldier sculpting history so he has an excellent pedigree.

Interesting story that Stadden sculps directly into pewter for the masters.

Fortunately, hats are available separately at Eight-wheeler's Shapeway shop.

Well one thing is for certain if you want figures from the 1930's you are going to need a lot of hats.
Looks like everyone wore them back then.

I've already emailed him. The figures I ordered from AC Stadden arrived a couple of days later and are superb. I'm looking forward to getting started on them.

Received some Noch figures today and they seem...variable - some are very nice, some are lacking much facial detail at all, and a couple seem to be miscasts (missing feet etc so they will became carriage passengers). I guess it is an old mould.

Preiser sold an unpainted set of 1930's figures that is now discontinued. You may find a set on an auction site or post a WTB add on one of the Yahoo groups.

Currently there are painted sets that meet your needs. Listed as 1900's or 1920's.(An example is #12133 On the platform 1900-1925)

A quick Google will point you in the right direction.
