Posted - 09/19/2016 : 2:48:22 PM I have had this projects on my to do list for some time, it is a rack car for shipping empty barrels back to the refinery.
See the images below and my best guess at the drafting, what I can not figure out right now is if the car should have total height of 12'-9" or a height of 12'-9" for the "rack structure" alone.
White's book lists this car at 47'-4" in length, but no other details are listed in the book. The photo shows dimensions as a height of 12'-9" length of 47'4" and width of 9'-10".
I think the taller one is correct, but I am not certain.

Posted - 07/19/2019 : 1:45:07 PM It's my understanding that Fogg had access to UTL records and expertise when doing the Allegheny River painting. So I personally consider that "almost authoritative" for the color of UTL cars. There's also, I believe, documentation of mineral red and even "silver" (aluminum?) colored UTL cars in the 19th century.

Here's another form of hauling loaded barrels as depicted by yet another rail art painting:

And this may be the Howard Fogg painting to which he refers...

Posted - 07/19/2019 : 11:08:35 AM An old (late 1970s - 1978 perhaps?) issue of RMC had an article on building a Standard Oil "Old Timer" tank car - the tank is sitting on a flat car as opposed to a "frameless" type tank car. I recall that same article had some information - and may have included a Howard Fogg painting showing some version of the barrel cars. There might be a tidbit or two of information in that article. Worth checking out. Marty |

Posted - 07/09/2019 : 10:37:46 PM Hey Y'all,
K-4 just released the decals for the Russell Cooperage car! Also, I worked with him on making decals for all the builders marks for ACF and predecessor car builders, along with those which were not absorbed by ACF. They are available in all scales, multiple colors and are on two sets. Check them out on eBay.
Thanks,

Posted - 05/29/2019 : 3:01:01 PM Hey Y'all,
I have no forgotten this thread, or the drawings of the cars to scale. I've been a little busy with a hail storm we had back on the 13th of April, and the mess it has created for me. I will be posting up shortly.
So far, we have as available decals:
A. Knabb Enclosed Cooperage Car AM Welti & Bros. Enclosed Cooperage Car HD Williams Cooperage Car Little Rock Cooperage Car
and now, soon to come:
The Russell Cooperage Car:

I have one or two other cooperage cars to be done and that rounds them all out.
I hope to have some plans up shortly. Thanks for your patience.

Posted - 04/16/2019 : 11:15:41 AM Sounds great Levi! Modern day spirit of the old Art Griffin collection. I bet you've got a lot of different stuff. I would say "new" but that isn't fitting at all considering the prototype source age!

Posted - 04/07/2019 : 06:13:21 AM Here is another Cooperage Car that I am building. It is from the Little Rock Cooperage Co. It is very similar to the HD Williams Cooperage Co car. While having similar length, notice that the truck are sunk into the framing. These cars are great and I'm looking forward to building them.

Posted - 04/06/2019 : 12:01:43 PM While we are waiting for the article to be posted up, I thought I would post up these two pictures of other cooperage cars.
The first is from the A M Welti Bros., out of Cleveland, OH. This is a 65' car, that is approximately 13' 6" tall, and 9" 6" wide. It has a unique three way, off center door. It opens on the top, the center, and the bottom. The indication is that there are floors in this car, otherwise there would be no reason for the hinge sets.

The second is the Hutchinson Cooperage Car. This is a 60' car, that is 11' 2" tall, and 10' wide. It is one of the few monster boxcars that existed west of the Mississippi and could not travel to the East because tunnels were not possible with it.

Both these cars are slated to be built. I've worked my plans on the Hutchinson Car already. I'm working on the A M Welti Bros now.
I thought I would share.

Posted - 04/04/2019 : 8:18:26 PM You are right. How did I get 25? Hmmm. Ok, well, 24 then. The drawings I'm doing reflect the proper spacing. Sorry about that.

Posted - 04/04/2019 : 6:55:15 PM I just checked your 2,3.... count and the photo, both add up to 24. The end shot of car 16 does work out to 26 per row as you note.
At 16 looks like it could be slightly larger too
