These 2 are the first of several left over from a large box lot of cars and rubbish (emphasis on rubbish, ) that I had bought a few years ago. I pulled all of the decent cars that took only a few hours of effort to move them to either keep or depart. The rest were salvaged for parts, trucks, etc and more than a few made some great kindling last winter,

But, I kept a few on the shelf thinking that there might be something there other than just kindling.

These 2 were basically wooden boxes with a boxcar roof section all nailed together when I started.

I suspect the Athearn paper came from the box containing the missing roof, floor etc.

Possibly...but Grandt Line hatches? Well, it's either those or some Scale Craft or Walthers metal ones out of the parts bins.

Working up the sides this week and a new interior framing & floor assembly.

Martin,

I always enjoy watching your resurrections; this one promises to be a Cultural Experience! Go for it!

Ok, something a little different - not a caboose

An older Main Line kit (why that Athearn paperwork was included is a mystery) that I had thought would be fun to relax with building....... except..... the roof is missing..... and the floor is missing ....and the end block (well, I think that's what they are...) are too short for the sides, and the doors that someone made are mismatched... and, so okay then.....it is a salvage yard exercise after all. Not sure if there are enough detail parts in the bag to do this car but not a problem there. Grandt Line narrow gauge reefer hatches....we'll see how those look....

Actually, this provides a bit of opportunity to install what might be better floor and underbody than the kit every provided. And, I'm betting that just about everything other than the sides will go into either the trash or the scrap box.

Nicely done!

Thanks, Mike.

I think I'm off cabooses and off to looking through the kits on the shelves for a bit of fun next.
Michael Hohn Posted - 09/08/2019 : 10:20:16 AM
Very nice.
mwbpequod Posted - 09/08/2019 : 08:57:45 AM
Done for now or as far as I'll go with this one....

And, that's enough cabooses for quite a while, I think. Off to some other type of car for the next exercise.

More painting, roof installed, ladders to be installed are off being painted...

Another fine build, Martin. What did you use for the railing stanchion bases?

Those bases are out of my stock of resin castings - almost too much work to use them; sanding the back flash off and then drilling them out for the wire......but probably better than just sticking the wire into the decking.

It all looks nice, Martin, the railings in particular. Itís interesting, the castings with steps and truck bolster combined.

Old Walthers castings - the actual steps are another set of castings that glued in place.

They do give this car plenty of weight!

Ends added, roof "adjusted" railings added, and a minimal underbody set out that may or not get expanded. Milled out the end castings to accept KaDee couplers, too.

You could say itís a transfer caboose thatís been transferred from the to-do box to the in-progress workbench.
