These 2 are the first of several left over from a large box lot of cars and rubbish (emphasis on rubbish, ) that I had bought a few years ago. I pulled all of the decent cars that took only a few hours of effort to move them to either keep or depart. The rest were salvaged for parts, trucks, etc and more than a few made some great kindling last winter,

But, I kept a few on the shelf thinking that there might be something there other than just kindling.

These 2 were basically wooden boxes with a boxcar roof section all nailed together when I started.

Very nice!

The details have really transformed the car side, Martin.

Sides are done....

The parts get soft and crumbly, sometimes with a white residue.

In this case the bolsters were cracked and warped off the floor a good 3/16" in the middle. Unscrewing from the floor let them fall into several pieces.

Usually this in the various Zamac alloys compromised by some contamination by lead, etc.

Zinc alloy castings can, over time, fail. This was the problem with the old Central Valley trucks and with a lot of die-cast boilers and other parts. The parts get soft and crumbly, sometimes with a white residue.

Rebuilt the underbody.......old bolsters were Zn pestilated.......and AB brake parts were just pinned in place.

Martin,

Outstanding job on these cars, you certainly build some beautiful cars.

Bit of a mess, but should also be a pretty quick rebuild and finishing job....

Really impressive work Martin. This they thread has been going for years and just keeps getting better.
Although the rolling stock is old, you are bringing them up to an excellent level of presentation.

Beautiful reefers and gon, Martin. I'm a big fan of your builds!

Yes, but I think that getting a kit car that's older than me to actually do that with opening doors is more than a little tricky.

Maybe when I build the unstarted kits I can at least recess the doors and sacrifice operating doors
