Well 8pm seems like a good enough time stamp to start the build, so here go's....

Yes, I'm bored again and have a couple of spare days while I await supplies with nothing to do.

So, I raked the leaves, mopped the floors, did the dishes, worked my way through a six pack and even finished the laundry, so now what ??

The next phase of Blue Sky is in the mailmans hands, which means two days away, O'Neills is awaiting a delivery before progress can be made...

hmmmm a quickie build... and this one is going to stay a quick build.... an upscale of FOS Red Bird Taxi to 'O'...

OK... I understand and thanks. I too have had a failure like this, back in the Quincy thread. I know what you mean about the picture, which in this case does not really show the issue. Looking forward to seeing you return to this build once you are done with the Blue Sky... which will probably be about Monday, 3 days from now.

Thanks for the write-up of the roofing panels ... all of the techniques combined in the process sound comfortable and familiar ... the outcome looks great ... think you've just scripted the process for weathering my roofing panels. (Roof? What year will that be?)
UKGuy Posted - 01/07/2011 : 1:24:08 PM
Yes Dallas in the pictures they look like natural wear but in person they look terrible.

Kris, here are the problems with the sidewalk

possibly due to adding the chalk before the paint was fully cured. I repainted it yesterday and it will probably be atleast a week before I get back to it as my BlueSky delivery arrived yesterday, it should be good and dry by then

Thanks to all for the comments.

Dallas for colouring the corrugated roof...
pannels were sprayed with grey auto primer.
when dry sprayed with flat black
when dry light grey craft paint was brushed on thinly allowing the black to show through slightly
Testors "rust" enamel was then stippled on with a stiff brush
Cheap craft "burnt umber" was then stippled over the rust
Panels were then applied to the roof
Black chalk on a detail brush to enhance the edges and shadows.
finally a wide brush over with very little orange/brown chalk to blend and enchance.

JD the siding is made of birch coffee stirrers, most of that graining is naturally how they come. Some extra graining was added with an exacto.
They were initially coloured in A&I,
once applied to the framing they were dry brushed with dark grey then light grey,
then two more washes of A&I.
Finally black chalk on a detail brush was used along the bottom and in areas where the boards were split.

I'm not Karl, but maybe with some time-lapse photography I could play him on TV! (24-hours builds, are you kidding?)

But, here's my guess ... if you look at the first sidewalk picture on the previous page, it looks fresh-cast ... then in the next photo there are some discolorations. I *think* that these just mysteriously appeared and stuck in Karl's craw (whatever that is) ...

And, yet, to you and me they pretty much look like the discolorations that just naturally occur in concrete ... so, I'll be curious too if the real Karl enlightens us!

I really hate to be dense here and I'm not trying to inflict any more pain in a 'sore spot', but what the **heck** (insert other 4 letter word starting with your choice of letter) is wrong with the sidewalk? What am I missing? The coloring is OK, groves are maybe a bit deep, but that's a non-issue. Is it the texture? Sorry Karl, but I'm just not getting it, and others appear to be. Can you beat me over the head with a empty beer bottle and point my nose in it? Thanks in advance... I think....

Roof panels look good ... please describe process when you get a chance ...

Sorry about the sidewalk ... though it doesn't look like a terrible problem from this end ...

Still haven't seen a single taxi ...

Excellent work! I have a question for you. On page 4, you have a photo of some siding. It is in between the photo of the framing and the new tool. How did you distress that wood, and what did you use to color it? The weathering and coloration are supberb. Thanks, JD.
