I recently added a small addition to my layout and now I need to add a few new structures to it. The first will be Juneco's CNR 250 ton Ice house. This was actually one of the main reasons for the expansion as I've had this kit for about 10 years and really wanted to build it.

It's not a large kit, about 4 1/2X 3 1/4" so it's a nice model railroad size. Especially for a home layout.

The kit comes with milled walls, strip wood and a bag of castings. It is pretty obvious that it pre-dates any laser cut kits.

So I finished up the icehouse today, starting with adding the shingles to the roof peaks.

a bit tedious, I had to cut the shingles out in pairs, then bend and glue them to the peak one at a time. I think it came out looking decent though.

I also added the trackside platform.

I stained the platform and the shingles with a bit of A&I then added a couple ice bocks and a couple figures. I used my fiberglass brush to scratch some paint off the siding. When I get around to it I'll probably add some dirt to the lower walls with my airbrush.

And this is where it will go on the layout. The platform side will be away from the viewer but you can see it from the side.

I will be removing the ground cover/ static grass from beside the track when I get around to adding the rest of the scenery. I have a few more structures to build for this area before that will happen.

Keeping with the ice theme, I'll be building this next to sit by the RR icehouse. It just seems appropriate to have to two next to each other.

Thanks Rich. The shingles are actually made by interaction hobbies. They aren't really available separate of their kits but Darryl made me up a set for this project.

Glen,

I have some of the same shingles, and I think they are from Fine Scale Miniatures. I haven't used them on anything yet, but you're doing a fine job with yours. Looks great.

I finally got around to adding the shingles to the roof.

The shingles are laser cut on heavy-ish tan paper. I stained them with some testors diftwood stain before applying them.

I then determined that a 2.5mm spacing would work best for the overlap so I penciled in guide lines onto the roof.

I used scotch double sided tape for adhesive. It took a couple hours to apply all the shingles. I still have to add the peak shingles but I'm not sure what to do about the valleys that are on the sides of the dormer.

Thanks everyone. Greg I do agree that they look like copies of the Weston figures, or they were sourced from them. I like the checker player but the fellow of the far right somehow reminds my of the late Gord Downie of The Tragically Hip.

I'm still waiting for the shingles for the ice house so I'll have to put this project on hold until then.
In the meantime I'll start the next project.

Glen, nice work on painting up those castings.
A few of those figures look just like the old Weston figures.

Fantastic looking job with your castings Glen. Your LP's are top notch, Great color choices. I've always liked that figure (checker player) on the left.

Good looking peps
Glen Haasdyk Posted - 01/02/2019 : 11:24:05 PM
Thanks guys. I finished up painting the castings this afternoon.

I primered everything in light gray, painted with some craft paints and them did a bit of airbrush overspray using rust and grimey black.

I painted the figures in the same way but with a much smaller brush. I'll be giving them a coat of dulcote to fix the paint a bit better.

Your ice house is looking Good. The color is fine too.

Glen,

I wondered about that little roof extension, but Iím no expert so stayed quiet.

Regarding paint colors, I think red paint was relatively inexpensive and readily available.

Nice progress Glen, your structure is looking good. I see you'll be busy with those castings. From the picture they look as though the castings are free of a lot of flash,(unless you already cleaned them up)and will clean up easy for painting.
Glen Haasdyk Posted - 01/01/2019 : 7:22:56 PM
Thanks everyone. I did change one thing on the roof after it was pointed out that the small extension of the main roof beside the dormer was un-prototypic by two roofing experts(thanks Greg). I've been slowly painting all the details but I was hit by the flu last Friday so I haven't been spending as much time in the workshop as I'd like.

Rich, Both Canadian National and Canadian Pacific seemed to have shares in the Boxcar Red paint factory as almost all their structures were painted, at least in part, that color.

Looks great Glen.

That roof line turned out pretty good looking too.
